Police intervention condemned

Kathmandu April 14-The Nepali Congress (D) and CPN-UML have condemned the arrest of the NBA lawyers and the “police intervention” in the rally.

Meanwhile, the seven-party alliance leaders held an impressive mass meeting at Gongabu, the hotspot of pro-democracy movement in the capital since the alliance announced its general strike on April 6. Addressing the meeting, NC joint general secretary Dr Ram Sharan Mahat said the continued peaceful movement would not end in a compromise with the King until he transfers state power and sovereignty to the people.

He also warned the security personnel against using excessive force against peaceful agitators and warned that those found guilty of doing so would be barred from taking part in the UN peacekeeping missions once democracy is restored. “Army and police are not the personal property of any individual or an institution. So, they must stand by the people,” Mahat said. He also accused the King of not responding to the people’s call for the restoration of democracy and peace. “What is the King doing when all sections of society have taken to the streets calling for democracy?” he wondered.
