Govt releases lawyers

Kathmandu, April 5 - The government authorities have released all the lawyers who were arrested from protest demonstrations in the capital Wednesday morning.

The government released the 16 lawyers arrested from protest demonstrations staged at Naya Baneshwor this morning, following the Supreme Court (SC)'s order to produce them before the court by 12 p.m. Friday.

Acting upon a habeas corpus writ petition filed by Nepal Bar Association (NBA) Treasurer, Bijaya Kanta Mainali today, a single bench of SC Justice Tahir Ali Ansari had issued the order.
Police had arrested the lawyers including NBA President Shambhu Thapa, General Secretary Madhav Baskota and Vice-President Sher Bahadur KC from a protest programme organised by the Professional Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD).

Lawyers in the Kathmandu Valley boycotted all court hearings today in protest of their arrest.
An emergency meeting of the NBA held on wednesday has decided to stage protest programmes on Friday as well.
